We created this interactive story for the 2017 global Family Planning Summit in London. It highlights the urgent need to provide access to contraception for the largest generation of young people in history.
A global movement
Family Planning 2020 (FP2020) was established in 2012 as a global movement to support the rights of women and girls in choosing – freely and for themselves – whether, when and how many children they wish to have. Working with governments, civil society, multilateral organisations, donors and the private sector, FP2020 aims to provide access to contraception for 120 million more women and girls by 2020.
We were asked to create an interactive kiosk focusing on adolescent girls aged 10-19, designed to attract the attention of influential people and organisations at the Family Planning Summit, and amplify the summit’s core messages to a wider public audience.
A complex challenge
The subject of adolescents and pregnancy in the developing world is filled with policy laws, social stigmas, and embedded gender stereotypes that run deep in many communities. Too often very young girls lack advice and access to contraception until the birth of their first child. It’s a rapidly growing problem, and not easy to grasp with data being sparse and under-reported.
This beautifully illustrated piece puts a spotlight on a large population of adolescent girls whose family planning needs and wishes must be addressed if we are to break the cycle of poverty for generations to come.

Presented as a simple illustrated narrative populated with pullout facts and data snapshots, Maya’s Future tells a succinct story bringing together broad topics, such as growing youth populations, extreme poverty, disempowerment, health risks and education. Built to be responsive and accessible, the interactive attracts a wider audience online, viewable on any device and easily embedded in external blogs.
