The Pyrenees

Since the Alpine stages we’ve been working on a few things in parallel. One has been to sync the live race position to a feed that’s kindly been opened up to us by Opta. Another is exploring a means of displaying multiple ‘current points’ to indicate the various locations of individual groups and riders on the course, and the mini-races that occur within main field. Lastly, we’re adding a replay function.

Race for podium places

With Froome and Contador crashing out before the first summit finish the race for yellow has been less exciting than it would have been, with Nibali looking pretty comfortable. The second and third podium places however have been really close; a race within a race. This chart shows the relative time differences from Nibali to the top six. The effect of the climbs on the General Classification is very apparent. Only the fifth stage over the cobbles has had as much influence as the mountains of the Vosges, Alps and Pyrenees.

We’ve added flythrough functionality to each of the seven stages we’ve mapped, this video shows Stage 18’s hors catégorie ascents of the Col du Tourmalet and Hautacam.
