Sustainability
Opinion is still very much open as to what sustainability is. Wikipedia’s
entry on sustainability
begins
with the following definition:
Sustainability is an attempt to provide the best outcomes for the human and natural environments both now and into the indefinite future. It relates to the continuity of economic, social, institutional and environmental aspects of human society, as well as the non-human environment.
We do not pretend to be experts on sustainability, but we do feel strongly about the issues involved. To that end, this page outlines the efforts we are currently making towards lessening Applied Works’ impact on the environment. This will no doubt be a learning curve for us, as it is for the world at large. We welcome comments and opinions; please send any feedback to us via our contact form.
Carbon Emissions
In January 2007 we approached co2balance.com
to
help us offset our carbon emmissions for 2006 and achieve ‘CarbonZero’
status. This year we have taken steps towards reducing our carbon footprint,
primarily through switching our energy provider to Ecotricity
and
improving the efficiency of our electricity usage. We hope to greatly reduce
the amount we will need to offset by the end of this year.

Recycling & Paper Usage
We recycle all our paper, card and plastic with the private London based recycling
company Paper
Round
,
while all our glass is dropped
off in our local public recycling point. Wherever possible,
we use FSC (Forest Stewardship Council
)
certified stock and printers to ensure that the print jobs we produce use paper
sourced from sustainable forests. Whilst the choice of papers is ever improving,
it is not always possible to find a comparable FSC alternative to the vast array
of non-FSC stocks available.
