About

Profile

Since 2004, Applied Works has earned a reputation for design excellence, identifying and realising opportunities for a diverse range of clients, from commercial organisations to research institutes. We develop working relationships that last, building teams around the specific needs of the project and delivering effective, measurable results. Our commercial work is balanced with self-initiated R&D projects, which allow us to develop fresh creative ideas using new technologies, adding value and bringing a different perspective to our client projects.

Core team

  • Client Director & Founder

    Paul Kettle

Paul is a trusted partner for our clients, helping them turn ambitious projects into reality by establishing actionable strategies at the outset, and ongoing support through to delivery and beyond. He also drives the funding initiatives that support our R&D work.

  • Creative Director & Founder

    Joe Sharpe

Joe steers our creative and strategic output across the business. A love of food, maps and cycling (especially up mountains) keeps him busy both in and outside the studio. Joe is also co-founder and author of Ingreedies, aimed at getting kids excited about food.

  • Operations Manager

    Tom Stobbs

Our Operations Manager Tom boasts a background in cheese, having run a delicatessen in Wilton for 2 years. These days, he supports Paul and Joe in the running of the business, looking after everything from contracts and equipment to PR and team building.

  • Lead Designer

    Bryony Szekeres

Bryony leads the design team, bringing impeccable attention to detail throughout the design process. This, coupled with extensive experience working with editorial content, ensures all the work we produce is both effective and of exceptional quality.

  • Lead Developer

    Richard Males

Richard draws on a wealth of programming experience to ensure the highest standards of code delivery. Although much of his work lives under the hood, the quality of code he oversees can be appreciated via the ease of usability and design finesse in the end product.

  • Designer /Developer

    Callum Strachan

Callum has knowledge and experience in both design and development, ideally placing him in the heart of production. He is an excellent problem solver, and provides a robust link between the design and build teams.

  • Designer / Developer

    Josh Ellis

Josh, one of a growing number of cycle enthusiasts in the studio, supplemented a design degree from Kingston with a 3 month residence in Makerversity for his student project Charlie, a ‘Tamagotchi meets Fitbit’ wearable for kids.

  • Studio Manager

    Pippa Allen

Our studio manager Pippa ensures the studio engine is well-oiled and running smoothly, as well as overseeing our accounts and invoicing.

Clients

We love to work with clients who present us with a challenging problem to solve, such as: communicating complex trends in global resources and trade flows for Chatham House; transforming software that orchestrates 100 million daily customer interactions with Genesys; or, how to engage the public with the energy consumption of venues at London 2012. Here’s what our clients say about us…

Applied Works have a rigorous, creative approach to developing editorial ideas and have been highly collaborative partners in our projects. Above all, their distinctive UX and design skills have turned promising commissions into audience successes.

This is a major step for Genesys, and Applied Works have been instrumental in defining the future vision, helping us with our long-term strategy, and re-imagining our flagship products for existing and new market segments.

Applied Works have shown consistent attention to detail, and a real interest in understanding the data we were visualising, and the messages we wanted to convey. We had a vision for this project and we’re delighted with the way it has come together in the final product.

With a development of this nature it’s all too easy to keep adding complexity and confirming people’s fear about pension planning. But Applied Works did a great job in helping us raise awareness of our retirement readiness survey and put some fun into retirement planning.
